How Did The Industrial Revolution Influence Women Suffrage
The Industrial Revolution was a catalytic period that redefined the means of production. This revolution started in Britain in the 1760s and spread throughout Western Europe and North America until the 1840s. The new inventions made workers go from making a product by hand to watching a machine make it for them. At a glance, one might assume that the revolution only influenced the production line. However, with deeper analysis, one can say that the revolution influenced female suffrage. Firstly, there were major differences in gender roles before and after the revolution occurred. For instance, before the revolution, males were primarily the wage earners, whilst females worked more domestically: clothing trades, teaching, and nursing.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This small movement of writing and discussing issues demonstrates how there was a rise in female political movements in the late 19th century. Overall, the Industrial Revolution directly led to female suffrage movements du e to the revolution s effects on gender roles, new governmental systems, and a rise in female political movements. There are many criticisms against presuming that the Industrial Revolution influenced female suffrage. Firstly, the gender roles of Great Britain were similar to that of other countries and yet the other countries had a different time for female suffrage, so gender roles should not be an influencing factor. For example, France and Great Britain had similar gender roles in terms of production. By 1750, Franceââ¬â¢s economy was seventy-five percent based on agriculture, whilst Englandââ¬â¢s was sixty-five percent based on agriculture (Scott Tilly, 1987). The similar means of production can also explain why there was an alike effect on gender roles after the revolution. One of the alike effects was the rise of the family wage economy. Females were viewed as economically dependent on males due to their being a wage gap between the genders. As a result, marriage becam e an escape for females so that they could gain greater financial security. With both countries having similar gender role differences, it shows that gender roles did not affect the female suffrage movement due to the proof ofShow MoreRelatedUnited states History midturn review1630 Words à |à 7 Pagespolitical bosses and the issue of womens suffrage? Social Inequality Patterns And Processes By Martin Marger
According Social Inequality: Patterns and Processes by Martin Marger, life chances includes ââ¬Å"education, physical and mental health, residence and justice;â⬠which are opportunities that we must procure through social resources (18). Our position within society determines our life chances; for children, their parentââ¬â¢s positions within society determines the childââ¬â¢s social status within society. ââ¬Å"Life chances are acquired, then, as a result of factors that are only partially in the control of individualsâ⬠¦peopleââ¬â¢s initial class position and, therefore, the dimensions of their opportunities and future prospects are essentially an ââ¬Å"accident of birth.â⬠Certainly, people may subsequently enhance their life chances through individual effort, butâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In addition, they endure more stressful family and work conditions which can lead to unhealthy lifestyle characteristics, such as excessive use of alcohol and mayâ ⬠¦(reword) poor nutritionâ⬠(19). Scottââ¬â¢s article Life at the Top in America Isnââ¬â¢t Just Better, Itââ¬â¢s Longer; provided many examples that showed the inequality between the classes. For example, Jean Mieleââ¬â¢s case; he had a heart attack and because of his social classââ¬âand connections established through his statusââ¬âhe was surrounded by two knowledgeable colleagues that knew something was seriously wrong with Miele, therefore; immediately calling an ambulance. In addition, because of the neighborhood Miele was in during the heart attack he was given a choice of where we was to go to receive medical care; within minutes of arriving at the chosen hospital, he was in line for an angioplasty to unclog the affected artery. After the heart attach Miele entered a cardiac rehab which was covered through his insurance. As Scott showed in her article, Miele never once considered the amount this operation cost or the price for his cardiac rehab treatment. However, when Ewa Gora had her heart attack, the medical treatment was completely different from Miele. Business Report Based on Monet for Financial- myassignmenthelp
Question: Discuss about theBusiness Report Based on Monet for Financial Services. Answer: Introduction This business report is based on a group of 5 holiday resorts in Australia which have decided to merge and form one business operation for the purpose of delivering better services to their customers and increase on their profits. The new business name resulting from the amalgamation of the resorts is Monet due to the merging, the business has increased on the varieties of services provided, for example, they provide a wider range of living quarters providing Backpacker, bed and breakfast, homes to luxuries suites in and around the country (Nocke Yeaple, 2007, p.365). The business will provide different services on booking websites such as booking.com, travel.com.ac among others to enable customers book directly. The booking will be managed via a single website. To promote customer satisfaction, a mobile application will be developed to help the customers manage their own account. The business intends to vary prices on the changes in demand, seasonal factors and environment among ot hers (DeYoung, et al., 2009, p.100) Assumptions made Various assumptions were made in relation to the new business emerged. Among others include; It is also expected that the emerging of the businesses will increase in the business effectiveness and efficiency. It is clear that big firms enjoy economies of scale as a result of reduced costs of operation, for example managerial economies of scale, research economies of scale among others. It is assumed that there will be an effective technological development as a result of the single website which has been introduced (Shaver, 2006, p.970). Through merging, it is assumed that the level of risks and uncertainties faced by the business will considerably reduce. Among others, some of the uncertainties that the business expects to overcome include losses due to high competition from other big firms that, managerial risks will also be curbed through the use the website. There is also an assumption of ensuring the maintenance of the standards that were initially set up and to ensure effective usage of the project resources (Martynova Renneboog, 2008, p.2148) It is also assumed that there will be an improvement in in the monitoring and tracking of the activities to be carried on. In other words, there will be a vibrant quality assurance team. The monitoring in this case is the process of tracking expected risks that are likely to rise during the business execution. It is important to take note of uncertainties that may cause business failures, this helps in preparing and setting strategies that are necessary for curbing the risks and uncertainties. It involves overseeing all the tasks and operations of the business to ensure achievements of the goals and objectives of the business since a single website is used, monitoring is expected to advance (Hauswald Marquez, 2006, p.970) Decisions proposed The top management of Monet has finalized the following decisions to affect the business via the website; Monet loyalty scheme which will play the role of reward customers with airport transfers, free tours, and free meals. This will aiming at building and maintaining a strong customer relationship. The team will foresee the needs of the customers, marketing aspect and how effective the business can be when it comes to its customers and this technology will automatically lead to improvement of customers service and will attract more customers (Cao, Zhang, 2011, p.170). To determine the strategic value, the company opt to develop Interactive tools in order to allow customers to choose, which particular tour they would like to undertake and aims at improving the degree of customer satisfaction that leads to strengthening of ties. Consequently the relationship between the business and the customers will be improved (Evans, Lindsay, 2013). The interactive platform will help the customers make their specifications needs, referring to what type of product and service they would want to be offered, when and where, basing on the fact that the business expects an increase in the number of customers. It also aims at developing the capacity of the business to interact with its customers. The analysis of this data may result in the establishment of a one-to-one approach encompassing a customized offer of products and services, adapted to the specific needs and expectations of each customer (Jiang, Qureshi, 2006, p.50). They have decided to develop an integrated ERP in order to enable management of the operation through a single Information Technology system. This will enable overseeing and managing of all the tasks that are involved in an operation with an intention of maintaining a certain standard of serving or achieving a specific set goals and objectives (Farrell Shapiro, 2010) A new Web 4.0 level ultra-intelligent electronic portal is to be created in order to enable customers self-manage their accounts with the company and to customize their shopping/booking experience. This is very vital in terms of technological change that is geared towards efficiency of the business. It will keep the relationship of the customers and the business making their booking faster and effective (Devos, Kadapakkam Krishnamurthy, 2008, p.1180). Critique to the management decision The subsequent management decisions are likely to affect the network of relationships established, especially with strategic business partners and the customers by creating effective communication which is quick, faster and easy (Dehning, Richardson, Zmud, 2007, p810). However the technology is not 100% secure. Technically, the business website can be constrained by the unfriendly or poor user interface that may limit the client-staff interaction. If effective and latest technology is not applied, information regarding the presence of the business may be limited for example, If Adds and pop ups in websites are not enabled and this will also reduce the business information about its presence (Angwin, Vaara, 2005). The decisions will improve on the role played by marketing department especially in line with customer relationship. They will integrate marketing, sales and services functions through the interaction of the business process, technological solutions and information resources, in order to maximize user friendliness with the customers. There will be facilitation of the relationships between companies, customers, service suppliers and workers (Shim Okamuro, 2011, p.193). As a way of improving the business efficiency and effectiveness, it is vital for the emerging to take place. There are expected decrease in the operational cost as the costs of rent is expected to reduce, the transportation costs will as well reduce if the businesses are emerged together. This is because the workers will no longer incur extra expenses in paying for the other services, Moreover; the company is even still cable of retaining and improving its sales basing on the fact that it will employ online technology of a single website. This type of operations favors big firms, implying that its a good strategy in expanding the business operations. Through the amalgamation, The management decision will help the business to reduce the human resource costs. These are the costs that result from recruitments, training and redundancy. It will all be looked upon and possible solutions of reducing such costs will be implemented. This will reduce on the business expenditure and the extra liquid capital will be ploughed back into the business. The company will attain an advantage of improving the Information Technology department which is expected to reduce the number of workers needed in operation accompanied by improved efficiency. However, this factor will also lead to unemployment of some workers. The decisions will help the business to highlight a need in the improvement of financial and human resources to help in the implementation of the technological innovation and improving the motivation of the workers respectively Through the above decisions, the business is expected to get more clients and also maintain its earlier customers and this will ensure continuity of the business and the costs will reduce if tasks are assigned to the respective personnel. However, the business may lose some customers who are not used to online bookings and those who cannot access the website due to the ignorance about the change in the website name. To a certain extent, the merging of the resorts may negative affect the business operations, for example, the bureaucratic process involved in decision making may hinder effective adjustments to new changes, its also most likely that the expansion of the business as a result of merging may attract government intervention in form of high taxes which will in turn increase the costs and expenses. The difference between information system and information technology The two terms are sometimes considered the same, used interchangeably, however, information technology is a subset of information system. Information system is a general term for the systems, people and all processes designed to create, store, process and distribute information. Whereas information technology falls under information system and particularly deals with the technology involved in the system. It is a study, design, support or management of computer based information system. It includes Hardware such as hard disks, monitors, keyboards and all the other tangible components of the computer, software such as Microsoft windows, among other intangible components. It also includes database and networks (Paulin, Ferguson Bergeron, 2006, p.915). Information technology and information system are playing both negative and positive role, for example creating a variety of job opportunities and long term professional advancement. On the other hand, information technology is increasingly creating unemployment, internet scams, and hacking among other. Impact of information technology and information system Over the past few years there has been a strong technological evolution in the field of information and communication with a significant impact on management. Companies are investing huge amounts in relationship technologies, leading to new forms of interaction. Therefore information technology has got a great impact on customers choice, continued patronage, brand loyalty business employees among others. Basing on the fact the company will be developing a mobile application, information technology is expected to act as a primary tool for getting in touch with customers (Shapiro, 2010, p.50). Clients will be making orders concerning bookings, expected services, making inquiries and making reviews of the services rendered. This therefore is expected to improve on customer satisfaction hence improving on customer loyalty. A well designed websites with external ads and popups are likely to attract more customers. If the company uses affiliate marketing, more customers will be informed and following the websites link. In this way, a bigger and wider range of customers will be attracted to into the website leading to increased sales (Shapiro, 2010, p.850). Business strategy to attract customers from the competitors In order to manipulate the market in and to maintain its reputation in the industry Monet management has put out the following measures to attract more customers Strong Information Technology department to ensure a more user friendly interface of the company website and hence more customers will be expected. Customer support can also be improved as a result of this department. The information technology of the business is also worked on to improve on its efficiency (Zhang, 2010). This is because the effectiveness of the business basically relies on the department. Basing on the fact that the company operates mainly online, it is very vital to ensure effective Information Technology department and Monet management is to ensure this (Altunba?, Marqus, 2008, p.210). Improving on the quality of services delivered to the clients by enhancing customer support. This is intended to improve on customers satisfaction as well as the workers, more especially the consultants of the business. As part of the business decision, it will ensure timely execution of the activities as it is to be scheduled. Adjustment will be made accordingly to the proposed schedules to ensure effective achievement of all the operations and each of the activity will be communicated and published via the website. Innovation is yet another strategy that will help the company to favorably compete in the industry. It has maintained a remarkable position in leading innovation and invention of new technologies for example that technic of working on a single website which is a new technology in place Other business opportunities Through the merging of the 5 resorts, the business has a high completive advantage over the other existing firms in the industry. This implies that the firm/ business has an advantage of creating a monopolistic environment by creating entry restriction. This can be through offering high quality services at a subsidized price, adapting extensive advertising, and pricing technique. The business also has a higher potential in maximizing revenue, given the fact that operational costs will be reduced as a result of merging. The company has an upper hand in carrying out research to improve on the quality of services offered. It is typically true that big firms enjoy research economies of scale. It is therefore typically relevant for the firms to maintain and carry on the decision of merging into one company as a positive result is expect (Chemmanur, Krishnan Nandy, 2011, p.4050) References DeYoung, R., Evanoff, D. T.V Show Analysis Essay Essays - Gender Studies, Social Status
T.V Show Analysis Essay Gender roles have long been prevalent in society, whether due to inherent nature or adaptation. In "That 70's show", we're introduced to a comedy induced series revolving around the lives of a group of mischievous teenagers. Through their daily routines and blunders, the gender roles that exist between individuals within the circle of friends become more apparent. As men and women have traditionally been privy to different expectations and circumstances throughout civilization, "That 70's show" further highlights the complexity of these dynamics, and how gender roles between men and women can differ and sometimes be reversed. "That 70's show" highlights traditional themes of sensitivity, thoughtfulness, and longing for beauty for females, and the obliviousness that comes with a male's lack of attentiveness, as well as need to be the provider. In the first episode I've chosen, Jackie portrays the first theme of sensitivity, and the emotional state of being most women tend to find themselves in. By detailing her array of emotions to the rest of the group, she meets the stereotype of females being more emotional and sensitive than their male counterparts. This crush that Jackie has on Fez also further highlights another aspect of the female gender role, beauty. Often throughout the episode, Jackie is seen trying to pamper up before Fez walks in the room to attract his attention to possibly mate. This dynamic of gender roles dates to the time of cavemen, in which women were often expected to find ways to attract the attention of males that they wanted to take interest in them. On the other side of the gender role spectrum, men are conditioned to not be as in tune with their inner inhibitions/emotions, because that action is deemed a female trait. For example, Fez is oblivious to Jackies signals, since men are taught to to ign ore tribal matters such as love, along with their feelings to not be categorized "soft". This also adds to the common stereotype that male lack attentiveness more often than women. In the second episode I chose, Red (Kelsos father) retires from his job. As a male, Red was accustomed to working and providing for the family. His wife (Forman) primarily preformed housekeeping duties as a stay at home mom, which included cooking, cleaning, and maintaining tidiness of the house. Most episodes of the series show Red returning home from work, and sitting on the couch to wind down from his tiresome work schedule, waiting for food and refreshment to be brought out by his wife. This dynamic of gender roles highlights the expectation of the woman to always serve the man of the house, and to accommodate his needs. However, once Red retires, he's forced to embrace the female gender role and help his wife around the house. As the main breadwinner of the family, Red is not used to a lot of housekeeping. This reversal of gender roles further highlights Reds inability to meet the sufficiency of what he has been expecting of his wife years leading up to his retirement, and makes for dramatic irony when he commits mistakes and blunders. This reversal of gender roles also allows Forman to criticize Red for his mistakes, and to assume the position of the enforcer and regulator that Red once held as a grumpy husband. By highlighting Reds mistakes during trying to manage housekeeping, the director of the show draws parallels between how men and women are both expected to meet each other halfway, and provide for the other what one is missing to sustain a livable environment. it also confirms that men struggle carrying out the expectations that face women, because Red is almost completely incapable of cooking, cleaning, or even correctly separating white clothes from colored clothes in laundry. Gender roles have been transparent in civilization since the beginning of time. Among many of these, the most commonly reiterated one seems to be that the woman must be subservient to the man. The stereotypes discussed In Signorelli's article conform to such gender roles, some of which are blatant misconceptions. In her article, she states that, "women are more likely to be spending their time dating while men are seen as working towards their success"

In Caryll Churchills
In Caryll Churchills collaborative drama Cloud Nine, there are some very interesting resonances between acts one and two. As readers, we have to pay close attention to the gender and ethnic backgrounds of the actors, and the significance of who they are portraying. Throughout this play, there are many roles that are filled with cast members who by society, do not seem like the perfect fit for their character. By using the doubling and cross-dressing methods of drama, Churchill is able to develop the gender, race, and sexuality themes of the play. The doubling of Clive and Cathy forced the readers to pay attention to who the actors were, and the significance of the role they were playing. Clive is a father-type figure, who is also the most dominating character throughout all of Caryll Churchills play. His roles as a father, husband, and government administrator allow the readers to see why he is the character with the most control. Clive shows his dominance over the other characters in lines 129-155, when he makes Joshua apologize for being rude to his wife Betty earlier in the day. This scene allows the readers to see that Clive can take over a situation and make his black servant Joshua, feel inferior even though he truly might not have been rude to Betty. Clive also shows his dominance over his wife Betty, when Mrs. Saunders comes to the house on horseback in lines 255 to 260. After saying a few words of admiration about Mrs. Saunders, Clive simply instructs his wife to take care of Mrs. Saunders by saying, ! Mrs. Saunders has ridden here alone. What will you have for her? Tea or something stronger. Betty you will no what to do(Churchill 813). When Clive says this, and Betty does not question the order she has just received from him. By Churchill having the actors accepting their roles, she has eliminated any conflict that might have been an issue if the actors had not acce...

Here is a collection of useful and interesting palladium facts: Essential Palladium Facts Atomic Number: 46 Symbol: Pd Atomic Weight: 106.42 Discovery: William Hyde Wollaston 1802 (England) Wollaston noted his discovery of the metal in 1802 and offered the purified element for sale in 1803, although there was some controversy regarding the discovery. Richard Chenevix believed Wollastons palladium to be a platinum-mercury alloy. Chenevixs palladium experiments earned him the 1803 Copley Medal, but its clear Wollaston did at least partially purify the element. He dissolved platinum order from South America in aqua regia, neutralized it with sodium hydroxide and precipitated out the platinum. Reacting the remaining material with mercuric cyanide formed palladium(II) cyanide, which was heated to yield the purified element. Electron Configuration: [Kr] 4d10 Word Origin: Palladium was named for the asteroid Pallas, which was discovered approximately the same time (1803). Pallas was the Greek goddess of wisdom. Properties: Palladium has a melting point of 1554à °C, boiling point of 2970à °C, specific gravity of 12.02 (20à °C), and valence of 2, 3, or 4. It is a steel-white metal which does not tarnish in air. Palladium has the lowest melting point and density of the platinum metals. Annealed palladium is soft and ductile, but it becomes much stronger and harder through coldworking. Palladium is attacked by nitric acid and sulfuric acid. At room temperature, the metal can absorb up to 900 times its own volume of hydrogen. Palladium can be beaten into leaf as thin as 1/250,000 of an inch. Uses: Hydrogen readily diffuses through heated palladium, so this method is often used to purify the gas. Finely divided palladium is used as a catalyst for hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions. Palladium is used as an alloying agent and for making jewelry and in dentistry. White gold is an alloy of gold which has been decolorized by the addition of palladium. The metal is also used to make surgical instruments, electrical contacts, professional transverse flutes, and watches. In photography, palladium is an alternative to silver, used in the platinotype printing process. Sources: Palladium is found with other metals of the platinum group and with nickel-copper deposits. The primary commercial sources are the Norilsk-Talnakh deposits in Siberia and the nickel-copper deposits of the Sudbury Basic in Ontario, Canada. Russia is the primary producer. It may be produced in a nuclear fission reactor from spent nuclear fuel. Health Effects: Palladium, like the other platinum group metals, is mostly inert in the body as a bulk metal. However, there are reports of contact dermatitis, particularly in persons allergic to nickel. This causes problems when palladium is used in jewelry or dentistry. In addition to these uses, environmental exposure to palladium comes from release by automotive catalytic converters, food, and workplace exposure. Soluble compounds of palladium are excreted from the body within 3 days (99 percent). In mice, the median lethal dose of soluble palladium compounds (e.g., palladium chloride) is 200 mg/kg orally and 5 mg/kg intraveneously. Palladium is poorly absorbed and its toxicity is considered low, but it may be carcinogenic. Most plants tolerate it when it is present in low concentrations, although it is lethal to water hyacinth. Palladium serves no known biological role. Currency: Palladium, gold, silver, and platinum are the only metals that have ISO currency codes. The codes for palladium are XPD and 964. Cost: The price for palladium continues to rise. In 2016, palladium cost about $614 per ounce. In 2018, it reached $1100 per ounce. Rebellion against an Authoritarian Society Essay
Rebellion against an Authoritarian Society - Essay Example The doctors and Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher) see McMurphy as a threat to the system, because he promotes free will, freedom, changes, and autonomy through questioning authority and inspiring fellow inmates to express themselves and demand their rights, and so the system deals with him through enforcing rigid rules and regulations and continuously breaking the spirits of their patients through oppression, manipulation, and sometimes, even though electric shocks and lobotomy. McMurphy is a threat to the ââ¬Å"system,â⬠because he questions its norms and assumptions, which instigates debate and discussion on the legitimacy of its power. An authoritarian society will never condone a sane man questioning the system because that questioning can lead to a revolution that will oust those in power. In the same line of reasoning, the hospital management sees McMurphy as a sane person, because he is rational enough to question the irrationality of the system. However, they also see him as insane, because they believe that he cannot change a social institution. McMurphy is a threat to the system because he is a bad example to the rest of the subservient society, or specifically, the inmates of the hospital. The patients are called inmates because they are supposed to be free since they can leave the hospital anytime. However, because of Nurse Ratchedââ¬â¢s control over them, they feel helpless and instead of resolving their psychological issues, they becom e more reliant on the system. McMurphy tells his fellow inmates: ââ¬Å"God Almighty, shes got you guys cominââ¬â¢ or going.ââ¬â¢ What do you think she is, [sic] some kind of a champ or something [sic]?â⬠He asks others to analyze their situation by criticizing the legitimacy of its control over them. He wants them to open their eyes that their conformity to rules and regulations already stifles their freedoms and free will. He says that Nurse Ratched is not a champ, which means that they are the champ. They are the champ of their sanity and their fates.

ISM Code, Costa Concordia capsize Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
ISM Code, Costa Concordia capsize - Essay Example The ISM code principles are as follows: All these ISM code principles can be implemented if only proper training facility to the officials. These training facilities are been given with the help of HRM principles which increases the human resource by proper training and implementation. The development of human recourses management has facilitated in increasing number of skilled officials. The officials in shipping industry like captain, major, emergency unit etc are appointed from the HRM having full knowledge of HRM principles. The safety management in shipping industry under IMO (International Maritime Organization) has implemented ISM facilities to the industry. The ISM code under the IMO has several guidelines like operation of the ships with the framework for proper development. Pollution prevention strategies are a good practice of the industry under the principles of ISM code. The ISM code is made compulsory since 1998. This code enables Safety Management System (SMS) to establish by every company of shipping industry. These SMS are defines by the person like managers or bareboat character who is assumed to be the person who regulates the ship operations regularly. This facility of SMS in ISM code is useful in the emergency times of accidents like the case of drowning of ship in Costa Concordia in Italy in July 2012. Due to the deficiency in the emergency signal, the accident took place, as per the evidences (IMO, 2014). The ISM code has been set up in the industry to ensure the safety and pollution prevention of environment. Thus for the betterment of the shipping industry and the development of safety in the industry, it needs proper managerial efficiencies in work-force which is given by the implementation of HRM strategies. Human Resource Management is a strategic management of the workforce for dealing and upgrading organisations in various industrial fields. The main principles of

Resolving international disputes Essay Example for Free
Resolving international disputes Essay Differences that you should be aware of Property Law Sources of law and method of judicial reasoning Property Law Civil Law You are either the absolute owner, or you are not. 3 components of absolute ownership usus (latin term) i.e. use Right of use fructus ie. enjoyment of revenues Right to enjoy revenues abusus ie disposal Right to dispose of that thing dismemberment This does not mean that the absolute owner cannot give away certain rights of the property, as long as the rights transfer back to the owner E. g. usifruct farmer has a large piece of land and son wants to get married and have family. Farmer is not willing to divide up the farm, but offers him a part of the farm where he lets him build a house and farm on it, but after 20/30/40 years the land goes back to the father Lease if you lease an apartment from the owner of a building, or a piece of land to farm on, etc you get the right to use it in consideration of rent. In this sense, the owner is giving away one right (the right to use the property) as long as at the end they get the right of use back. Common Law Theory no absolute ownership of land King gives a portion of the country to the Earls. In common law, there is a difference between ownership and possession. The Earls possess it, they are holding the land for him. The Earls will provide him every year with something in return (e.g. bushels of corn, men for war, etc). Earl gives a portion of that land to the Dukes, and asks that they hold it for them, in exchange for bushels, men etc. Dukes to the Lords, all the way to the peasant/farmer. When the farmer died, he was not able to give it to his children it would go to the lord, etc up the chain and that person would redelegate it. Known as the feudal system. Leasehold is when you hold it for a limited period of time. A freehold is where you hold the land forever, and you can sell the land, leave the land to your children. The only way it reverts back to the king is if someone dies without leaving any heirs, which means it goes up the chain of ownership. 2 types of ownership Real Beneficial Origin and Concept of Trust William the Conqueror said I am Law, but there were problems with this as the king could not see every subject. Eventually, he became busy with other things (wars, etc) therefore he set up a system of courts. They did not have to see everybody, unless they issue a writ. System of writs a court order telling someone that someone complained about you therefore you have to show up at court on xà day. You only had a writ for certain problems. Trespass (tort) When someone caused you or your property personal injury Habeas corpus (produce the body) When someone grabbed a relative of yours and wrongly imprisoned them. This came about because of the idea of Where there is a remedy (ie. a writ) there is a right, but if you did not have a writ to cover a specific problem, then you did not have access to the courts lead to a parallel system of justice called Equity lead to new legal concepts such as the TRUST Trust you are too rich and do not want to be taxed. Therefore, you give some wealth to the friend who is going to hold it for you until the children are of age and you have died. The problem arises when the friend does not give it back. They have no writ therefore cannot take it back through court. When the friend goes to court, they argue that the land was given on a condition of trust (the friend was trusted by the father to give the property back). In addition to the possibility of someone being the absolute owner, they can also be the owner subject of a trust. Trust difficult to define, Underhill gave one of the best definitions under 5 parts An 1 equitable obligation, 2 binding a person (trustee), 3 to deal with property over which he has control (trust property), 4 for the benefit of persons (beneficiaries), of whom he (the trustee) may be one, 5 any one of whom may enforce the obligation Equitable obligation obligation created under the law of equity which was established by the courts of equity Who has the obligation The trustee What is the obligation To deal with the trust property over which he has control For what purpose For the benefit of the beneficiaries What is the consequence if the trustee does not deal with the property The Trustee can be sued by any one of the beneficiaries How a trust works There are 2 ways to set up a trust The settler gives trust property to one or more trustees for the benefit of one or more beneficiaries (essentially a gift) Can be through a will or agreement (intervivos trust) involving the settler or the trustee By way of declaration of trust a person simply declares that he is hold ing certain property in trust E.g. someone wants to set up a business, but does not want it known that they are the shareholders. Therefore, someone else holds that position, but signs a contract that states that all income goes to them, and they will exercise the wishes of the settler. Examples of trusts wills, Real Estate Investment Trusts (REIT), endowments You may set up a family trust for tax planningà purposes. You can spread your income across the beneficiaries of that trust. Shareholder agreements, where sometimes money is put into a trust. There are wide personal business and tax-planning purposes to trust. differences between civil law and common law ownership In Common Law, a property can have two owners. The real owner (whose name appears as the owner) or the beneficiary owner In civil Law, you are the owner, or you are not. Only one type of ownership. 2 Sources of law and method of judicial reasoning both systems have 3 sources Judicial Precedent ie. Court decisions Legislation Doctrine ie. scholarly writings articles or books that are written to explain the law, and very often to criticize it th e difference between the two systems is the weight and importance of each source Common Law JUDICIAL PRECEDENT (most important) Court Structure Supreme Court Court of Appeal Trial Court Each court is bound by its earlier decisions. Trial Court is bound by its earlier decisions unless overturned by the Court of Appeal, same thing for Court of Appeal with Supreme Court, etc (stare decisis stand by the past). The Supreme Court is also bound by its own precedents The Supreme Court has overturned its own precedents, such as the decision that people cannot be segregated but equal, as in the case with discrimination. Principal known as stare decisis stand by the past Abortion example of Row vs Wade (or something like that) How do you know when a judgement is a precedent To know that, you have to analyse the precedent Conditions for decision to be binding Decisions divided into two parts Ratio decidendi the reason for the decision for arriving at the decision (only this is the precedent) Obiter dictum other reasons that the judge has for coming to his/her conclusions It is often not clear which is the obiter dictum and which is the ratio decidendi. The facts have to be almost identical. What happens when they find a precedent they do not like They could try and find differences between the case then and now. What then happens is that if the judges can distinguish between it, they make judge-made law, which is an area of contestation and disagreement. Judges are not supposed to make the law. Legislation In the common law system, legislation is not as important as judicial precedent. If a court interprets a law in a manner in which the parliament doesnt like, parliament can pass a law countermanding that. Catch ( legislation is subject to judicial interpretation, and this means that the rules regarding stare decisis apply to interpretation. Therefore, when youà are looking in the common law system, and you are wondering what does this legislation mean, you look at any court judgements/precedents in order to understand its meaning and application. Additionally, from a business point of view, there is very little legislation on very important aspects of business law. (e.g. you find it on leases, contracts of sale, etc but other types of contracts such as agency, etc there is no legislation, and therefore strictly jurisprudence applies. Additionally, to a large extent there is no legislation regarding torts As a source of law, it can supersede jurisprudence, but does not feature as much. Doctrine Scolarly writings For historical reasons, doctrine is less important and less abundant than it is in the civil law system. They try to summarise the law and put it in a rational form. CIVIL LAW Judicial Precedent (Jurisprudence) Not as important as in common law because a) There is no concept of stare decisis (Courts are not formally bound by higher courts, they just carry more weight. Another level can just choose to overrule) (2) Legislation Originally, the first code of laws that was developed in the western world was developed by the Roman Empire. This was different for a huge number of places because it covered such a wide expanse. When Napoleon ruled, there were even differences within France itself He created a different set for France and the rest of the Empire, The Law of Paris, and codified it into one document, and in 1804 it became law. It dealt with things such as family law, property law, contract law, civil liability, etc A code does the following in regards to each area that it deals with, it sets out general broad principles then sets out certain principles within. They are so broad that it covers the subject matter. For example, in civil law under Quebec, civil liability is anyone that is capable, is liable for any damage he/she causes through a wrongful act to a third party. Once you have this principle you have rules of application (e.g. what is the liability of parents if their children does wrong) (3) Doctrine Doctrine is much more important than in the Common Law system. Before, in Common Law system, if you wanted to become a lawyer you didnt have to go to school, just work with lawyers and read books. Example Abraham Lincoln never went to school he studied on his own and ended up becoming a lawyer with the help of those he worked with. Ended up becoming one of the most renowned layers in the USA before h e went into politics. Difference between the two Civil law ( would read Justinian coda and makeà annotations and commentaries and some would start publishing codes. When Napoleon made some laws, books came out analysing the books and laws. Judges read the laws and doctrines as a basis for their judgements (today there is more doctrine in the Civil Law system than common law) Common ( Lets see what the judgment says Civil ( lets see what the doctrine says LEGAL SYSTEMS SPREAD BY COLONIZATION AND CONQUEST Common Law Includes India, England, USA Why common law is different around the world English Common law applied to the Colonies, so far as it was adapted by its institutions and circumstances. This means that you apply the English Common Law as far as needed, then you apply a chain of precedents As colonies gained independence, they established a cut-off date after which British precedence would not apply to them Over time, jurisdictions formed their own supreme Courts under their own state of appeal. After a certain date, Canada said that their Supreme Court judgements were right, and people could not go to the British House of Lords for an over ruling, and this happened everywhere. Civil Law Formed out of Spain and all of her colonies, Germany, Italy, Portugal and its colony Brazil, and each country has its own civil code. The rules in France are not the same as the rules set out in Quebec, however the sources, the role, all of that is similar. Quebec Situation Was both a French and British colony. The French King was given a choice keep Quebec, or keep the islands of St Pierre and Miquelon. He decided to keep the islands. In 1774, the Quebec Act was adopted by parliament. In 1774, the 13 colonies started to push for independence. They adopted the Quebec Act, which was intended to protect the religion, language and culture. It created a hybrid system of Common Law and Civil Law. It said that local Quebec Law (Civil Law) will govern property, contracts, family law, civil liability. Basically, in Quebec, what was used was old Roman law and the custom of Paris. Under the Quebec system, the court system became a British system. The result was that Common Law heavily influenced civil law. July 1866, the Civil Court of Law in Canada codified the Civil Law in Quebec (like Napoleon and France). Much of the Civil Code of Canada was taken by the Napoleonic Code. Unlike what you would call the traditional Civil Law System, stare decisis was used in Quebec. If you read a judgement from a Court of Quebec and one outside Quebec, you would question whether it is not a Common Law system. This is because they are a Civil Law system, but they reasonà similarly to the Common Law system.

Time magazine :: essays research papers
Time magazine's June 6, 1983 cover story called stress "The Epidemic of the Eighties" and referred to it as our leading health problem; there can be little doubt that the situation has progressively worsened since then. Numerous surveys confirm that adult Americans perceive they are under much more stress than a decade or two ago. A 1996 Prevention magazine survey found that almost 75% feel they have "great stress" one day a week with one out of three indicating they feel this way more than twice a week. In the same 1983 survey only 55% said they felt under great stress on a weekly basis. It has been estimated that 75 - 90 percent of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress related problems. Job Stress is far and away the leading source of stress for adults but stress levels have also escalated in children, teenagers, college students and the elderly for other reasons, including: increased crime, violence and other threats to personal safety; pernicio us peer pressures that lead to substance abuse and other unhealthy life style habits; social isolation and loneliness; the erosion of family and religious values and ties; the loss of other strong sources of social support that are powerful stress busters. http://www.stress.org/problem.htm Israel's health problems are similar to those prevailing in the Western world. Since heart diseases and cancer account for about two thirds of deaths, the study of these illnesses has become a national priority. Also of great concern are medical care for the aging, problems arising from environmental changes and conditions emanating from current lifestyles, as well as traffic and occupational accidents. Health education programs are widely used to inform the public of the need to stop habits such as smoking and overeating, as well as lack of physical exercise, which have proved detrimental to health. Campaigns are also run frequently to increase workers' and drivers' awareness of potential dangers. Environmental Hazards Environmental and health hazards have been generated by rapid population growth and steady expansion of agricultural and industrial activities. More than 70 percent of Israel's industry is concentrated along the narrow coastal zone where meteorological conditions are unfavorable for the dispersal of pollutants. To combat pollution of the Mediterranean and Red Sea coastlines, Israel has adopted a multifaceted program of legislation, enforcement, beach and shore clean-up and international activities, primarily within the framework of the Mediterranean Action Plan. Under conditions of water scarcity and intensive development, the degradation of water quality constitutes a critical problem.

Love Sex and Relationships Essay
Sex, and Lasting Relationships by Ingram ââ¬Å"Love is the state in which man sees things most widely different from what they are. â⬠-Nietzsch Many times we just forgo some of the warnings of love and we fall into infatuation. Our love is biased, meaning we donââ¬â¢t let time indicate the growth of our love, we often forget that love is centered in the partner, that we need to grow everyday in order to have a better relationship with God and each other. Sometimes we fall in love with two people, when true love focuses on one, we often follow our flesh. Many times we feel insecure about our partner, when in true love we donââ¬â¢t even have to think about deceive. We very often try to skip the obstacles instead of fighting together, we let distance become an obstacle, is it real love? In general we are a generation of the present, when getting into a relationship; we forget that an important thing is to think about the future together, driven by our media and our sex centered society it is really easy to get overwhelmed by a miss leaded definition of love. ove has three main components: those of the spirit, mind, and body. Ingram calls these agape, phileo, and eros: selfless love, a beautiful friendship, and physical love. Interestingly, and according to what I see in our society and in what is portrayed in the mediaâ⬠¦ love is eros, more and more erotic scenes, more and more body involved, less talk more action, what is that? Our societies conception of love, seemingly, has fallen into a selfish flesh satisfying ââ¬Å"Loveâ ⬠. I mean it is well understood that love comes first through our eyes, and that this physical attraction is a very important part of a relationship, but love cannot stand on it itself, if we are driven only by eros, we are more averse to fall into sinning by cheating on our partners, our view of Though to help eros, there is ââ¬Å"phileoâ⬠, or companionship. This love is the kind of love needed to get to know each other well, sometimes we are just rushed by our emotions and we step into a relationship we did not mean to get into. Firstly we need to spend time with each other, but spending time itself is nothing, unless we share our lives openly, and freely. We need to have this companionship were we play games, we share our happiness and our sadness, what pastors often call quality time. By listening to my friends, those who are in a relationship, I have noticed that all the talks they have with their partners (be them couples or just friends), are very superficial, arrogant and self-centered, meaning there is also a third component for love to be fulfilled. The third component of love is the so called ââ¬Å"Agapeâ⬠, the selfless love, the not infatuated. And I really like how the author puts it ââ¬Å"giving others the most when they deserve the lessâ⬠. And better defined in 1 Corinthians 13. Are we in love or infatuated? ââ¬Å"Indeed, steamy starts do not promote our best thinking. Intense emotions often block us from taking a careful and objective look at ourselves, the person we are dating, and the relationship we are forming.

1st and 2nd Peter
1st and 2nd Peter The Christians around the time I Peter was written were undergoing some intense persecution. Socially they were shunned, abused, insulted and ridiculed, and Peter realized that the circumstances were getting worse. Nero was Emperor of Rome during the time I Peter was written. He oversaw the persecutions of Christians. Peter wrote this letter to offer encouragement to Christians suffering this persecution. (I Peter 2:18-20) As a result the church in Jerusalem was being scattered throughout Asia Minor. Some of the ways Christians were being persecution during Neroââ¬â¢s time were, being nailed to crosses or sewn up in the skins of wild beasts and left in the sun to die a horrible and painful death. They were used as torches to illumine Neroââ¬â¢s parties. Through this time it was Peter who reminded them that Jesus has set an example for everyone and that although there is much suffering on Earth, they are promised an imperishable inheritance in heaven. It states in I Peter 2:21-23 that ââ¬Å"this suffering is all part of what God has called to you. Christ, who suffered for you, is your example.Follow in his steps. He never sinned, and he never deceived anyone. He did not retaliate when he was insulted. When he suffered, he did not threaten to get even. He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly. â⬠That is what the letter rejoices. Although the Christians wanted so bad to get even with Emperor Nero and his people, they stayed humble, and pulled through their suffering (I Peter 3:9). The author calls Christians to be holy as God is holy, for they are a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and Godââ¬â¢s chosen people. In the Bible it does state that as a Christian you have decided to not go back to the evil desires such as immorality and lust, feasting and drinking and wild parties and worshipping other idols, but you will be anxious to do the will of God (I Peter 4:2-3). The Bible says that there will be people who ar e surprised that you donââ¬â¢t participate in their wicked ways and they will say evil things about you and torture you (I Peter 4:4-5). This is much like the Christians during the time of Nero.Nero didnââ¬â¢t understand why Christians didnââ¬â¢t believe and worshiped like his people did, therefore he completely rejected their ideas and put them through a lot of torment. One reason for their persecution was their life-style as aliens and foreigners in the heathen culture. Peter wanted Christians to know that, yes, we as Christians are aliens and foreigners not only to Rome but also to this world. We are only visitors here, and in our short time we have here we must live and glorify God in everyway possible (I Peter 1:17 & 1Peter2:11).Nero is described to be fair- haired, with weak blue eyes, a rather large neck, and a potbelly. He came off to have a very strange mixture of absurdity. Nero was artistic, weak, sensual, bi-sexual, aggressive, extravagant, and later in life rat her disturbed. Early on in his ruling, Nero came across as very a civilized person. He gave the senate more freedom and considered ending the murder of criminals and gladiators in the arenas, he made city wide reforms and was very upset that the law required him to put 300 slaves to death over the fact that their master, a powerful senator, was poisoned by them. Many historians report that he was very reluctant to do it. Later on in his ruling he became absolutely obsessed with the arts, recreation, and sexual desires. He had many affairs and began to go about his evil ways once his mother began spreading rumors. The main reason Nero persecuted the Christians was because of something that happened during the burning of his city. It was around 64 A. D. when the Great Fire of Rome took place. Rome had 14 different districts and only 4 of them remained untouched. The fire burned for a total of 6 days and 6 nights. At that time, people started a lot of rumors about Nero, saying that he â â¬Å"fiddled while Rome burnedâ⬠and this rumor spread throughout Rome, creating other rumors. People believed that Nero was the one who started the fire so that he could totally wipe out Rome and start a new city named after him in its place, also that he could build a better palace. Nero didnââ¬â¢t like the fact that people were spreading rumors about him so he decided he needed a scapegoat to blame the fire on.He chose the Christians. Neroââ¬â¢s attempt to use them to take all of the blame off of him failed. Everyone turned against him after this tragic event and the senate decided that he should be flogged to death. But instead of going through this humiliation, he made the decision to commit suicide. He died in 68 A. D. and during his 14 years he managed to establish a bloody reign of terror and to the world he will always be remembered as an insane tyrant. The culture around the time of Nero was rather interesting.Much of the furniture they used was couches, not too many chairs, and they almost always reclined even at the dinner table. The most popular room was the lavatory were there were rows of toilets with arm rests were people would sit and talk for an hour or more. Baths were equivalent to that of a modern day athletic club. There were several rooms including the sweat room and the warm room where sweat was scraped off by slaves because soap was unknown.Foot races, boxing, and wrestling were minor sports in this era but chariot racing and gladiator contests where the most amusing to watch. These events tie in to the persecution theme of I Peter. When Emperor Nero decided to blame the Christians for the burning, he threw them in to the arena and made them face gladiators and wild animals, killing them. Peter says that we should expect ridicule, rejection and suffering and that persecution makes us stronger because it refines our faith (I Peter 2:21-25).Nero completely rejected the idea of family. After his stepfather adopted him, he was e ngaged to his stepsister Octavia, and after awhile he became involved with a woman named Acte. As he became even more lustful, he began having an affair with another woman and his mother got enraged and sided with Octavia. He then attempted to kill his mother, more than once it was said. He tried poisoning her 3 times, he also tried to murder her by loosening her ceiling on a boat and almost drowning her but she managed to escape. After his failing attempts, he then hired an assassin who clubbed and stabbed her to her death in 59 A. D. Peter truly encouraged the idea of family life in the fact that he urged all family members to treat other with sympathy, love, tenderness and humility (I Peter Chapter 3). Finally, the theme that is found mostly in II Peter is the false teachings. One of the reasons that Nero persecuted almost all the Christians was that fact that they didnââ¬â¢t conform to the heathen culture that he encouraged during his reign.Heathen culture emphasize the import ance of relationships with gods and goddesses, ancestors, spirits of the land, and otherââ¬â¢s in the community. Since the Christians living in Rome at the time believed in the one true God they were mocked and tortured, but in no way did they give into the false teachings that were in their surroundings ( II Peter chapter 2) Works Cited Nosotro, Rit. ââ¬Å"Nero. â⬠13. 05. 2007. 13. 05. 07 . Applying when you dont meet all the requirements for a job
Applying when you dont meet all the requirements for a job Ever come across a job youââ¬â¢re keen on but decide not to apply because you couldnââ¬â¢t check off every item on the requirements list? Many of us (women especially, according to internal research by Hewlett-Packard) tend to shy away from putting our resumes forward if our qualifications are less than perfect for a role. And while some explain this away as a confidence issue, a survey reported on by Harvard Business Review showed that a good 41% to 46% of people donââ¬â¢t apply for positions theyââ¬â¢re not 100% qualified for because they believe that the listed job criteria are set in stone, and they donââ¬â¢t want to waste time and energy if they donââ¬â¢t have a chance. But the truth is, itââ¬â¢s not often that hiring managers will insist that every requirement is met. In fact, field experts will tell you that a job description is usually just a bold act of optimism and wishful thinking on the part of a recruiter, who doesnââ¬â¢t honestly believe that suc h a dream candidate even exists. Itââ¬â¢s much like the search for a romantic partner: weââ¬â¢d all like to find someone who ticks boxes X, Y, and Z, but weââ¬â¢d probably settle for a match with just X and a little Y.So, should you apply for that role that doesnââ¬â¢t quite align with your experience? It depends, but you definitely shouldnââ¬â¢t dismiss the possibility too quickly. To decide whether itââ¬â¢s worthwhile applying when you donââ¬â¢t meet all the requirements, ask yourself these questions. And if the answer to most is ââ¬Å"yes,â⬠go for it. (And if you think youââ¬â¢ll need help revamping your resume to the job ad specifications, consider puttingà a free resume builder to work.)Questions to Ask Yourself When Youââ¬â¢re Missing a Few QualificationsDo I satisfy the non-negotiable criteria?Thereââ¬â¢ll likely be a lot of fluff in the job description ââ¬â ââ¬Å"bonusâ⬠requirements, you might call them ââ¬â but thereâ⠬â¢ll also be certain must-haves that are key to a candidateââ¬â¢s ability to do the job. Figure out what these essentials are, and if youââ¬â¢re confident you possess them, then go ahead and apply. Remember, you can always grow into the nice-to-haves.Am I confident I can do the job?Read the posting carefully and try to envision what the successful candidate would do on a daily basis. Based on this, think about whether the role is one you genuinely believe you can take on, and whether youââ¬â¢re confident you could quickly fill any gaps. Youââ¬â¢ll know deep down whether youââ¬â¢re capable despite your shortcomings or whether youââ¬â¢re aiming too high.Am I a good overall match?Answering this one also requires some thorough research ââ¬â into the company culture, the hiring manager, and the team youââ¬â¢d work with. Employers regularly hire candidates that feel like a good fit, even if they donââ¬â¢t satisfy all the criteria. So, if you can clearly comm unicate why youââ¬â¢re an outstanding match based on the businessââ¬â¢s values, goals, and working environment, you could potentially make up for the fact that youââ¬â¢re wanting in other departments.Does the job genuinely excite me?Itââ¬â¢s important to be realistic here ââ¬â no matter how much the prospect of being a pilot thrills you, youââ¬â¢re not going to get the job if youââ¬â¢ve never flown a plane. But if youââ¬â¢re more or less qualified and youââ¬â¢re really enthusiastic about the job and the organization, this will hopefully come across in your application and help to compensate for the few qualifications you lack.Do I have transferable skills relevant to the role? These are competencies you developed in former roles that transfer well to new (unrelated) positions ââ¬â soft skills, for example, like the ability to communicate clearly and work well in a team. Analyze the posting and make connections between your skillset and the strengths th eyââ¬â¢d like a hire to have. If you can show that you possess many of the required abilities, even if you have insufficient technical knowledge, you have a higher chance of being considered for the role.Planning to Apply? Keep These Tips in MindSo, youââ¬â¢ve answered ââ¬Å"yesâ⬠to most of the above, and youââ¬â¢ve decided to apply. Follow this advice to up your chances of landing an interview.Perfect your cover letterIf youââ¬â¢re thinking about applying when you donââ¬â¢t meet all the requirements, then youââ¬â¢re going to need a strong cover letter. Use it to highlight your transferable skills and the unique value you could offer, rather than focusing on what you lack. Be sure to also convey your passion for the position, your confidence in your ability to do the job, and your commitment to hitting the ground running.Use the right keywords Take note of the kind of language thatââ¬â¢s used in the job ad and pepper your resume and cover letter with iden tical industry-specific phrases (while still being honest). This way, you can work the system to your advantage and get your application through keyword-reliant applicant tracking systems (ATSs) and into human hands.Connect with an insiderWhen the odds are stacked against you, your best chances at success lie with having the right connections. Donââ¬â¢t know anyone at the company? Check LinkedIn to be sure. Still nothing? Then research relevant names and reach out to them to ask (politely) if you can send through a few questions ââ¬â or better yet, meet over coffee. Once youââ¬â¢ve established a connection who can make introductions, youââ¬â¢re a lot closer to securing your dream position, and it starts to matter less that you donââ¬â¢t meet every requirement.LiveCareerà offers assistance to jobseekers at every step of the journey. How to Answer Ethical Interview Questions
How to Answer Ethical Interview Questions Ethical interview questions make for a very interesting interview. How would you react if you could only save your grandmother, a bus full of orphans, or a trunk full of a million dollars in untraceable cash? Which would you rather have, billions of dollars or immortality? Theyââ¬â¢re also risky in an interview- you donââ¬â¢t want to trip some secret ââ¬Å"sociopathâ⬠wire, but you also want to seem confident. What do you do if youââ¬â¢re posed with ethical interview questions like ââ¬Å"would you lie for the company?â⬠or ââ¬Å"what would you do if your boss asked you to help cover something up?â⬠DONââ¬â¢T go full outlaw. If you answer, without thinking, that of course youââ¬â¢d lie for the company, youââ¬â¢d do anything for the company, thatââ¬â¢s a red flag. It either shows that youââ¬â¢ll say anything to get hired (bad) or youââ¬â¢re seriously ethically challenged (worse). The interviewer isnââ¬â¢t really asking you to do this thing , so slow down a bit before you start helping him with an alibi. If you get the sense that the interviewer isnââ¬â¢t kidding, then itââ¬â¢s time to shut it down. Do you really want to be rehashing this conversation later with an attorney?DONââ¬â¢T get all judgmental about the question itself.ââ¬Å"How dare you?â⬠is not the right answer here either. No oneââ¬â¢s impugning your reputation by assuming you would lie or commit other ethical crimes on behalf of the company. You likely wonââ¬â¢t score bonus points for righteous indignation- the interviewer is asking because he or she wants to know how you would approach this, not inviting you to tag along on some unethical spree.DO treat this as another problem-solving exercise.Like oh, 75% of interview questions, this may be a test of your thinking and problem-solving skills. Talk through your process- especially if itââ¬â¢s the kind of ethical question that requires you to make some kind of judgment call between t wo attractive elements.DO see it as a choice of values as well.Do you have integrity, or do you have loyalty? These arenââ¬â¢t usually mutually exclusive, but if youââ¬â¢re asked point-blank to pit one against the other, always go with integrity. Assuming your interviewer isnââ¬â¢t Alec Baldwinââ¬â¢s character from Glengarry Glen Ross, itââ¬â¢s not likely your potential future employer values ruthlessness over personal integrity.DONââ¬â¢T give a binary answer if you can help it.Itââ¬â¢s okay to frame it as, ââ¬Å"I would never do anything to hurt the company, but I do value honesty very highly.â⬠For good measure, you can emphasize that you were drawn to the company because you value its culture of professionalism.DO err on the side of caution. This could also be a test of how impulsive you are. Make sure that the response you give (even if itââ¬â¢s a vague ââ¬Å"I can see both sides hereâ⬠answer) shows the level of care and attention you would br ing to the role.DO take it seriously. No matter how outlandish the hypothetical situation is, treat it with full consideration. It may be funny, but itââ¬â¢s a very real test of your temperament and values. You want to make sure that youââ¬â¢re positioning yourself as a grounded professional, with strong values and a sense of personal ethics and boundaries.

Crisis at Canoe Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Crisis at Canoe - Essay Example ordinance will be the primary means used to measure how food handling, storage, and preparation are carried out at the Canoe premises, although some other general observations will be made. When I arrived at the Canoe location, I observed how busy the kitchen was when preparing for the lunch service. This tends to suggest that demand in the local area is high and Aqua can adequately keep up with high demand. Furthermore, all of the kitchen staff were dressed in bright, clean uniforms. Appearance is everything when it comes to making food, even if many of the cooks are never seen by the patrons. Unfortunately, this is where the successful practices stopped. I felt a little warm while in the kitchen, and so took off my coat only to realize that the kitchen thermometer read 73 degrees F. What I witnessed next shocked me completely; a large frozen turkey was defrosting in a dish on the counter. This violates two components of the LA county restaurant grading ordinance. The first is that the temperature should have been no higher than 70 degrees F. The second is that the ordinance only allows frozen food to be thawed under running water at no higher than the previously mentioned temperature. This is in gross violation of the ordinance, and could result in severe penalties if an inspector witnessed this event. Apart from the issue with the turkey defrosting on the counter, the assistant head chef was preparing a chicken casserole and beef vegetable soup when I noticed that the woman did not wash an instrument when switching from preparation of one type of meat to the other. Once again, this violates the ordinance in two instances; equipment must be cleaned between uses and the temperature should not be in the danger zone (40 degrees F to 140 degrees F). One positive action that I witnessed was that the chef and all his assistants were wearing gloves, yet none of them were wearing hair nets. The ordinance requires safety hair nets, gloves, and clean uniforms at all

Computer Network Principles Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Computer Network Principles - Essay Example The connectivity involves library, departments, student halls of residence (Campus Area Network. 2007).The network devices and computing equipments have to be consistent and extendable, if the faculty staff increases. The school consists of 6 departments. Every department has different requirements, in order to employ network resources. The network layout of the school requires an expandable and efficient network which will fulfill the requirements of the school staff. Network security considerations will also be given for the special laboratories servers and lecturers. The connectivity and access level for each group is not same. Internet connectivity is limited; it means everyone is not allowed to access Internet. Scanners and printers are required by some departments in order to print and scan related documents. The network design with centralized administration is called a client / server architecture. This architecture is best suited for centralized administration. The same ne twork architecture is deployed in the school premises. The initial stride will is to classify the requirements. This will include the network devices and functionality for fulfilling the requirements for the school staff. The justification of the selected computing devices and the network equipments is required. The second stride includes the network design. The design will clearly identify, floor connections, office connections, servers, workstations, printers, scanners and cable types. The third stride is to implement a Wide Area Network (WAN) to connect other locations or Internet connectivity. The first floor includes Administration, Staff Office and the technical staff. The staff office will access the file server which is the ââ¬ËStudents notes distribution serverââ¬â¢ for uploading notes. Students are facilitated at the same time for downloading the notes. The lecturers will connect

Paper1 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1
Paper1 - Essay Example College life provides students with a lot of freedom and this independence brings with it a lot of responsibility. Students will be expected to handle all their work with maturity and would be solely responsible for all their actions. An important aspect mentioned in the article is regarding the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) which further entrusts upon the student an exclusive right on all their records and forbids the institution from sharing any information even with a parent without permission from the student. These provisions thus expect students to make conscious decisions during their stay in the campus. The Act however, does not cover the public lives of the students and no form of protection is offered to the students in this regard. Students will be provided the required guidance about how to conduct themselves within the campus and handle their education by counselors and academic staff, but at the end of the day students will be left to decide what is best for them. While universities provide immense freedom to students to make their own choices through the FERPA, it refrains from providing any student related information to anxious parents unless a written permission is provided by the student. Many universities do not encourage parents to hover over their grown up children as they firmly believe that students have the ability to decide what is best for them. Through the FERPA, students who live in the university campus and away from their homes need to fulfill other responsibilities apart from academic issues such as paying their bills or doing their laundry. While the university provides guidance to the students, it however does not enforce or restrict their activities. However in extreme cases the university can impose sanctions or decide to terminate the enrollment of the student when they are found guilty of misconduct or fail to

Protectionism: Advantages and Disadvantages
Protectionism: Advantages and Disadvantages Trade protectionism is implemented by countries when they believe their industries are being affected negatively by unjust competition. It may be seen as a defensive measure and it is almost always driven by political forces. It may turn successful, especially in the short run. In the long run, however it usually does the opposite of its intentions as it can make the country, and the industries it is trying to look after, not so competitive on the global marketplace. While economic theory suggests, and economic history demonstrates, protectionisms counter productivity on a global scale, we still believe that economists have a responsibility to defy increasing protectionist pressures by more than just recitationfree trade benefits. The typical protectionist argues that the traditional case for free trade is based on an oversimplified model which is no longer applicable to the real world. These charges are usually based on misconstructions or misinterpretations of the role of assumptio ns in economic theory. The fundamental illustrations of international trade theory are not necessary conditions for the theorys conclusions to have real world relevance. Protectionism is the governments actions and policies that restrict or restrain international trade, often done with the purpose of protecting local businesses and jobs from foreign competition. Classic methods of protectionism are import tariffs, subsidies, quotas and direct state intervention. The fact that trade protection hurts the economy of the country that enforces it is one of the oldest but still most astonishing understandings economics has to offer. The idea dates back to the beginning of economic science itself, which gave birth to economics, contains the argument for free trade by specializing in production instead of producing everything, nations would profit from free trade. In international economics, it is the direct opposite to the proposition that people within a national economy will all be better off if they specialize at what they do best instead of trying to be self-sufficient. Current debates and discussions about what kind of trade are good and about how open markets affects economy usually has hypothetical character, or takes place due to the influence of interest groups or subjective reasoning. Recent global economic crisis has caused a big change in ideas and policies against free markets and in favour of government intervention. Regardless, the analysis of trade development allows making simple conclusions which is relevant in the current discussion: countries adopting free trade policy prosper, while closing the markets leads to deficiency and economic slowdown. The main aim of this essay is to analyze if protectionism adopted by many countries, especially European countries can be a valid economic policy and if not, why so. It will look at the European Union and discuss the not so long ago fears of rising protectionism within the EU. Advantages of protectionism Protectionism marks an economic theory that emphasizes the minimization of free trade between nations. There are currently a lot of nations that practice economic protectionism; such countries believe that the manufacturing of goods should take place domestically, rather than in a global setting. Generally there are two main types of government control on international trade; tariff and non-tariff. Previously, the main dispute between supporters and opponents of protectionism was focused on the discussion of arguments again and for using tariff as an economic policy instrument. Non-tariff barriers became usual in the last years and many of them are used by countries as an escape passage in free trade agreements, since WTO agreements have much weaker restraints on non-tariff protectionism than on tariff. The supporters of protectionism build their arguments on the following: 1) An advantage of protectionism is that it keeps the domestic economy rolling. Since there is a decrease in imports, domestic firms have less competition, and so are able to continue. The domestic economy will also be strengthened because unemployment will be down due to the domestic firms and they will be able to produce and sell more goods with a lot less difficulty, giving firms less reason to decrease its costs by decreasing its workforce. Those with jobs will continue to consume while allowing the economy to flow. 2) Protectionism makes domestic firms less competitive in the export market, as import barriers raise domestic prices through higher costs for mediocre inputs this means that export products also become more expensive and decrease in market share against the international competition. 4) Protectionism permits the new and upcoming firms to work and develop at an acceptable rate, because they will not be pressured by foreign, more experienced firms. The new firms can grow until they themselves are big enough to compete in international markets, encouraging positive features for the domestic economy in the future. 5) Protectionism can also prevent dumping, this is where foreign and bigger economies enter an economy and sell their goods at a price lower than the costs of production. Therefore, the consumers of that specific economy are spending more than the consumers in overseas areas. 3) An exception in which protectionism could improve a nations economic well-being is when a country has monopoly power over a good. Economistsà [1]à have argued that a country that produces a large percentage of the worlds output of a good can use an optimum tariff to take advantage of its latent monopoly power, and thus gain more from trade. This is the same as stating that a monopolist will maximize profits by raising prices and reducing outputs. As stated before, many countries practice economic protectionism and it may hold several advantages over the separate notion of free trade. Disadvantages of protectionism Trade protectionism has more than a few disadvantages, the most noteworthy of which are the pressures it places on the very core principles of free trade. Further disadvantages are the protections it offers to firms that contest on a stage of price over quality, the incorrect sense of security that it builds and the denial of easy access to certain products for consumers. At the core of protectionism are tariffs, duties, quotas and any other measures designed to restrict the import of foreign goods in interest of protecting domestic companies from foreign take overs. More disadvantages are as follows: 1) Consumers pay more with protectionism. Without a system of competitive pricing, domestic companies are free to raise their prices without raising the quality of their goods. When a business has no competition then the consumer is left without options. 2) Businesses suffer from protectionism too. Government support often builds corporate contentment, which could lead to a business to believe that it has a pleasant safety net set up behind it in the event of strong foreign competition as these businesses might not have the resources necessary to survive on their own. 3) Trade protectionism limits consumer access to foreign goods and non-domestic companies that offer unique products and services are also subject to the restrictions. 4) Foreign businesses and domestic consumers face the greatest disadvantages of trade protectionism. Businesses face imbalanced restrictions while their domestic competitors are offered financial advantages, and the consumer ends up paying higher prices for a limited variety of products that are not always worth their costs. 5) Protectionism can cause a retaliation reaction from other nations, ruining vital relationships between nations. a clear example of this would be the relationship between USA and China, when the US put boundaries on the Chinese tires , China retaliated by putting up barriers against different U.S. goods such as their chicken. This kind of hostility between nations decreases the specialization between two nations, eventually damaging the economy. Additionally to all of this, some governments provide subsidies and loans to businesses that are not able to compete against their foreign competitors. These actions restrain the free market by giving benefits to domestic companies while creating consequences upon foreign businesses. Some argue that trade protectionism is a step towards anti-globalization because of these reasons. Where is protectionism most prominent The U.S. has a long history as a protectionist country, with its tariffs reaching their highest in the 1820s and during the great depression. The countrys protectionist policies changed toward the middle of the 20th century. In 1947, they were one of the 23 nations to sign mutual trade agreements in the form of the general agreement on tariffs and trade. That agreement, modified in 1994, was substituted in 1995 by the world trade organization in Geneva. Through WTO negotiations, most of the worlds chief trading nations have significantly reduced their customs tariffs. The mutual trade agreements normally bound protectionist measure instead of eradicating them completely, however, calls for protectionism are still heard when industries in different countries suffer from economic struggle or unemployment believed to be aggravated by foreign competition. Critics argue that, over the long term, protectionism often ends up hurting the people it is supposed to protect and often encourages free trade as a greater alternative to protectionism. Another region that protectionism is becoming more popular is Europe. Recently the European commission drew attention to the increase in protectionist inclinations worldwide. It stated that 123 new trade restrictions had been implemented over the time span of 8 months (2012) this was an acceleration of 25% compared with the previous period studied. However the commissions own anticipated trade reforms, were ignored. These would push the EU itself towards further protectionism, they were seen to hamper with the global economy and hurt developing countries, according to an ODIà [2]à study.EU import likings for low income countries are focused around primary merchandises. Thats why they have lower tariffs for these goods. These encouragements have strengthened structural shortages towards extractive industries especially in sub Saharan Africa. The EU modifications have prevented these economies from expanding into value adding industries, hence slowing their development. Even though the proposals suggests using trade to improve development, there is little acknowledgement of the influence of the EUs Common Agricultural Policyà [3]à , which distorts trade and prevents development. The economic subsidy given to farmers alters world prices and the external tariffs punish foreign farmers selling products to the EU market. These interventions prevent many developing countries progressing through export-driven growth. In this context, the EUs moves towards further protectionist measure are a cause for deep concern. The policies threaten to damage developing countries and reduce the efficiency of the global economic system Based on economic theory, all elimination of trade barriers is beneficial to the world economy. Through increasing trade barriers, by tariff and non-tariff funds, domestic consumer costs increase, foreign exporters sales decrease and efficiency gains through comparative advantageà [4]à are prevented. These decisions are hence political. Arguable they have been put in place to prevent possible rivals from catching up with EU countries. The statement that the imports from the middle-income countries will be substituted by those from low-income countries seems doubtful. It is vital to distinguish between the cases for free trade for nations own benefit and the case for free trade for all nations. The first is an argument for free trade to improve one nations own well-being, also known as the national-efficiency argument. The other is an argument for free trade to improve every trading countrys welfare. Both of these cases assume that free markets determine prices and there are no market failures. However, the reality is that market failures can and do occur. Market failures can rise from governmental action as well. Hence, governments may misrepresent market prices by subsidizing production, as European governments have notably done and as all wealthy countries governments do in agriculture. Governments can also protect intellectual property unproductively, leading to underproduction of new knowledge; they may also overprotect it. In those cases, production and trade, led by inaccurate prices, will not be effective. Conclusion The history of trade development shows that protectionism and free trade policies were replaced to correspond to a certain economic situation in the world. However, there has been apparent shift to open markets, decreased trade barriers and international cooperation among countries in the last few decades. With all of this said, the impact of recent economic slowdown pushed many countries to stray from free trade agreements in order to support domestic economies and employment. As a result, what we are seeing today is protectionism which is not an upfront declaration of a trade war using tariffs; rather it is protectionism with non-tariff weapons. These metaphorical weapons are used mainly by developed countries especially by many European countries. Demands for labour and domestic market protection stand as a problem for European leaders. They run against EU rules that guarantee the free flow of goods, services and workers. There are two sides of using protective policy, but it is clear that the disadvantages of such policies will almost always prevail over its advantages. Economists stress more on the threats rather than the benefits of protectionism, and claim that it is not a solution for problems in the long run. For European and other countries it is extremely desirable to find ways to increase employment and reduce the impact of the crisis, but using any sort of protection would have very little short run benefits. It would also result in reduced worldwide employment very quickly and make growth prospects much more difficult when recovery does come. It is not even a case of when one country benefits at the expense of another. Such moves might bring upon a chain reaction of protectionism that makes the economic slowdown even worse. One countrys protection will not just hurt partner-country exports. Sooner or later, the formers exports will be affected as well. Therefore Europe should avoid adopting protective measures separately, as free trade is seen to be the only solution to crisis by stimulating future growth and creating jobs in the future.
